Atlantic City

Every casino played a song of its own-slot machines dinging, chips clacking as the dealer passed them out to the players at the tables, and the chatter of people throwing down money with the hope of hitting it big. It was like a carnival for adults. A person could get lost for days in a place like this. And many people who came to the city did, the thrill of the gamble… the hope to be the one who beat the house. But as Jennifer moved around the floor at Artemisia in her form fitting red dress, matching lipstick, and black heels… she knew all the hopes of the people in their would be dashed.. at least of those who were winning a log of money. Her job was simple, make sure the house always won. The owner was a mutant with an simple power he could detect the X-gene in people, and from there he built himself a staff of mutants with the skills to make sure the house always won.

A large chunk of them were like her, strays he picked up and offered a home too and then locked away to jeep things in his favor. Some were just crooked people like him who were happy to rip people off and make a living doing it. He had upped his muscle the past few nights, as a customer wasn't too happy about being ripped off and was posting more than a few unflattering posts online and social media. Now there wasn't anything out of the normal, the review of most Casino's wasn't great when it came to the winning streak for people, but this person had managed to get a few videos that while not conclusive did show some strange things.

One she leaded looked a person shifting shapes, another a bit of black energy being absorbed into a person's body, and what looked like wolf eyes on one of the bouncers. Nothing that wasn't easily waved off as crazy YouTube conspiracy, but enough to make her current boss less than happy and a bit paranoid. Jen sighed as she made her rounds waiting to be told who she needed to focus on for the night to spin their luck around, this was normally her freedom… the rooms they were kept in weren't bad but they were still locked behind doors till work hours which sucked. With the added eyes in the casino meant she was getting no time to herself, or a chance to just enjoy her work of ruining other people's nights… it was all she had to amuse herself with these days so she figured she might as well enjoy it and be amazing at it. She sat at the bar board out of her mind as she waited for someone to stumble in and start winning too much, or to need a hand in throwing some extra money around. So as she waited she sat at the end of the bar sipping on a water, and every now and then the bar tender would come by give her a sweet smile, and Jen would give her fingers a twirl creating a white luck disc out of thin air and press it into the side of the bartender to give her slightly better luck with her next serve, her next flirt, or whatever they wanted to do. After about the fifth time a strong hand grabbed hers and jerked her up, she grunted as she was spun to look eye to eye with a very large man…he was one of the bouncers. Had extra thick skin and minor super strength. Rou was 90% sure the looks the man had were 100% ugly stick and not mutation.

"Careful with the light show princess, boss wants every extra careful. And don't need anyone seeing you flashing powers.

Rou's eyes rolled a bit as she patted the man's cheek in a bit of a condensing fashion a grin on her lips.

'Aww Mikey, I'm always lucky you know that. Don't worry your disgusting little face about a thing…"

She smiled up at him as he grunted and roughly pushed her back to her stool going back to his rounds around the bar.

Meanwhile at Xavier's Mansion

The posts online and the videos while largely written off as conspiracy by most people did not go fully unnoticed. And those with a trained eye could see and analyze the information a bit better. One of the people who was able to do this was an X-Man by the name of Network. A mutant who could make Google blush had picked up on the stories and seen the videos, her trained eye was able to pick up on the details other missed…and her ability to talk to technology that took the videos most likely didn't hurt either.

While Sarah was part of the mansion security team, that wasn't all she did. As part of the X-Men, she also made it a point to monitor social media networks as well as government networks for mentions of any situations that the X-Men might need to intervene in. Not everything she did was entirely legal, but it didn't bother her. This particular catch was one she'd looked into more when she'd caught it, the mention of complaints against a casino that may or may not be using mutant powers against visitors. That wasn't what concerned her so much. Not until she looked a bit deeper, digging into the casino - Atlantic City, not so distant from New York City, when it came down to her power set. It only took a bit more of her particular kind of snooping before the mentions of a possibly captive mutant came to light, and that was all she needed to bring it to the attention of her teammates.

Having already done the majority of the research herself - including route planning, accessing the casino's floor-plan, and the basics of an idea on how to handle a hopeful extraction - she hoped peacefully, but that wasn't the team she was aiming for, let's face it - she was given the lead on the mission. Which was slightly surprising and a bit intimidating, considering the team. Logan, Bobby and Kitty. The only possible issue was Bobby and Kitty, who were still having issues with each other, but Sarah didn't intend on letting this be a friendly-chat situation. She'd bring them in, show them the situation, and they'd head out in one of the bigger vans. The jet would be idiotic to take for half a state over. It'd be a long drive, but with her powers, she could get them past any cops, checkpoints, and any issues on the road without a problem.

This was the beginning of month two for Kitty, back at Xavier's. Just as she'd hoped - things had fallen back in place, mostly. She was teaching math and computer science, working with kids to help with their powers, and semi-avoiding Bobby since he told her to get out of his room that one day. January sixth. Not that she kept track or anything. She had offered to help Sarah with computer stuff, but honestly? The technopath had it - which left Kitty's free time to play. She had no problem doing things that were probably not legal - because it was a challenge for her, and she hadn't been caught. Yet. And besides, SHIELD knew all about her and had used her. So, hacking? making codes? Possibly trying to market her new network protections? All in a day for the prodigy.

What wasn't in her usual day? Some sort of fight. It was so...odd...compared to her last stint as an X-Man. Then it had seemed that every other day was some crisis of infinite proportions. The Brotherhood up to something. The Hellfire Club out to take over the world. Aliens. She'd been at the mansion for almost two months - and nothing big had happened. Well, there was Christmas Eve - but that wasn't big,. That was eventful. She was surprised to find she missed that conflict; she'd just blame Chicago. It was easier that way.

So, when she got the call to meet for a mission briefing, she was excited! It was going to be a team thing - which meant that there was a potential for conflict, but they needed people who were good at talking to. She had no clue who else was on the team; not that it mattered. She'd fought along side of everyone, and loved them all. Sure, she was really good fighting next to Logan and Bobby (usually), but hey - she wouldn't be picky. A chance to go on a mission was outstanding.

There was a moment of concern if Bobby was selected - but then she shoved it away. The one thing she could say about Bobby (okay...there were many, but the one APPROPRIATE to the current situation) was that he would focus on the mission. It didn't matter if he wasn't talking to her; they were a team, and she still trusted him with her life - and with anyone's life, and he'd be awesome at dealing with the mutant if they were a kid. If it was a fight? Well, no better defense than Iceman!

She sauntered into the mission briefing room with a smile. "Heya Sarah! You get to be in charge, huh?" She waggled her brows. "Impressive..." Her tone was absolutely teasing. That was their relationship. Sarah was the one who helped her shop for her clothes for the Hellfire Club Ball. She played games with her, and the pair enjoyed breaking each other's code. It was a female platonic romance. "Weird question. If two guys hanging out a lot are a bromance, what's two girls hanging out together?" Curiosity was the Hallmark of this Kat.

She took her seat, asking, "Who else is on the team?" Her smile was wide; there was no worry with the young woman. She was happy to be here, and happy to be doing what was needed.

Logan had heard two words in all this mess, actually one word but his mind provided the other as a matter of course. Casino. Run. Next to Pub. Crawl. or Jet’s. Bed. they were some of his favorite words. Casino’s were always full of right bastards willing to do anything for money, which made knocking them over and roughing up their bosses ever a pleasure. Kicking the crude out of bosses who were actively using mutants to mess with people’s fortunes? That was Logan’s version of winning the lottery.

So the old man got his gear together, uniform in a sleek black briefcase, old beat to hell and back cowboy hat on his head, a few smoke bombs in his pockets and headed to the meet up. Sarah was running this one, so it ought to be far more fun then normal. Knowing the part of angry gambler and crowd watcher well meant he didn’t even have to dress up. His old cowboy boots with more miles then airline cards, new crisp blue jeans and a rugged looking though fairly new plaid button up were all the undercover he’d need for Jersey. God damn Jersey, nothing good every happened there it seemed.

“Usually a bitch fest from what I’ve heard, Pumkin.”

Logan’s tone and gait were unusually happy, even joyful. He’d been feeling the ring rust of too much down time and soft living. Jet was in his life and that made him happy, however it meant less time for his normal habits of drinking, fighting, chasing skirts, and hitting students. Ironically it had led to him being around the mansion more and actually showing up for most of his classes, something the students were still trying to sort out.

“Ok, how long till wheels up? Who we shaking down? What do we know about this potential shitfest? Most of all, who’s bringing the beer?”

Logan was looking forward to seeing Sarah in charge, looking forward to a mission with both his daughters on the same team. He was also looking forward to seeing how Icecube dealt with all this. Bobby and Kitty never fought, so seeing them scrap with words was enticing.

“This is going to lead to me being stuck in a tin can with wheels again, ain’t it?”

It had become normal for Sarah to automatically sift through the mountains of information bombarding her on a daily basis from the massive amount of technology surrounding her, especially at the mansion. This particular snippet of information had come through the social media algorithm she’d designed and implemented, that monitored and sent her things she might find interesting or necessary to know. She had other such programs, of course, for different areas of the internet – government sites, dark web, corporate channels – but the social media one was the simplest. It had simply been a matter of tracing it back and tracking the source, and then digging deeper afterwards. Not incredibly difficult for her, really, until she’d gotten closer to the heart of the matter. Which was why there’d been a team called in.

For the time being, she was dressed normally, comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt for a long drive, a backpack at her side containing her uniform and her usual accessories. Toolkits, communication devices for everyone, a tablet and connection wires, her taser. As Kitty entered, seemingly impressed by Sarah’s lead on this mission, the technopath paused in rolling up the physical maps of the casino she’d printed for Logan, raising a brow at Kitty. She’d actually forgotten that Kitty hadn’t been around while she’d led the Legacy Squad for a few years, and she gave a slightly bashful half smile and shrugged.

“I mean, I already did most of the work, so at this point I’m pretty sure y’all are just there as my backup.” She teased right back, smiling at Logan as he walked in. Her answer was obvious bullshit, and she knew Logan would know she was joking. The only reason she’d been given ‘leadership’ on this was because she’d done the research and knew the layout and plans. Bobby and Logan still had seniority on her when it came to the team, and Kitty did too, she was pretty sure. Snickering at Logan’s answer to Kitty’s completely random question, she didn’t bother answering it, nor did she sit down as they started firing off questions.

“You, me, Logan, Bobby.” Was her quick, succinct answer, not bothering to show any emotion towards the fact that she knew about the current feud going on. Glancing at Logan, she slid him the roll of physical building layouts, as well as a tablet, same as she slid Kitty, and one prepped for Bobby. “All the info I’ve gathered on the casino, the chatter on the possible mutants being held and used there, as well as building plans and anything else I could find, is on there. We’re leaving once Bobby gets here. We’ll take one of the big SUVs that’s bulletproof, not the jet. I’ve got us booked for a hotel room in the casino’s attached hotel under a false name so we can have a meeting spot when we get there if necessary.” If they needed to change, alter plans, take more precautions, anything. The tablets had all of the information she’d found on them for everyone to peruse in order to come up with a game plan.

“We need to get in, verify the information – that they’re holding and using mutants against their will – and rescue any captives. Minimal damage, as under the radar as possible for such a high profile target.” That was going to be hit-or-miss, depending on the nature of the target, of course, and she knew it, but it was worth mentioning. A public place like a casino would make it both easier to vanish into a crowd, and more difficult to slide away once they’d caught the attention of whoever was going to be in charge. After a second, she grinned at Logan.

“I’m driving.” She let that sink in for a second, before her grin widened with a wicked tilt. “Because we won’t be stopping for speed traps, cops, or traffic lights.” She had no intention of this drive taking any longer than it had to, and she would make sure of it. She knew how to do it safely, and this was definitely a time when she could do so.

Contrary to popular opinion, Bobby took his various roles relatively seriously, it was everything else in life that he tended to ignore. So when Bobby walked into the briefing room with a rucksack over one shoulder and caught sight of Kitty, well despite the fact that they hadn't been talking and Bobby was pretty sure she'd taken Coleridge's royal toilet cleaner and stuck it where the sun doesn't shine was moot at this point. There was a mutant in trouble, and that meant that he and Kitty were going to have to be able to work together, even if that meant that Bobby was going to have to be uncharacteristically quiet for once.

Which was why he packed a pair of headphones, if he couldn't avoid her, then he could at least drown her out for a while with his tunes. "I call shotgun," Bobby said, there was no way he was going to be stuck next to Kitty for a drive to Jersey, even with Sarah's driving.

"I'll buy you a six-pack of non-alcoholic beer if you manage to avoid talking about your need for alcohol during the car trip." Bobby smirked. "But yeah I'm ready to go whenever you guys are."

The night was slow, it was off time for the casino. Things would pick up once spring break hit, so now it was mainly just the regulars the casino was used to seeing. Which made for a slow night or no fun for Jen. She sighed as she spun away from one of the down and out guys giving him a boost to keep him spending for the night when one of the bouncers grabbed her by the arm and spun her around.

“Break time Jen.”

She scowled as she was lead off the casino floor by the arm like a child. Break time just meant she was going to get chucked back into her room, get a half hour or so to clean up, change and do whatever before she was let out again to finish her night off. She scowled and jerked her arm free from the bouncer.

“I can walk just fine, just cause you keep me in a cage don’t mean you get to treat me like an animal.”

She hissed at the man, who glared at her and pushed her forward with a grunt, scolding her for talking out load and reminding her what they did with those who got out of line around the casino with a harsh whisper in her ear. They entered the main lobby, and the bouncer punched his code into the slightly dated security keypad, the door hissed as it unlocked and he roughly pushed her into the back. If anyone was looking they would have seen the small girl stumble and grunt as they entered a much more modern looking hallway different from the rest of the building. The security door closed behind them as the pair moved to the end of the hall to an elevator hidden in the back of the building. It took them down to the holding room, and Jennifer was pushed into her small room. It had just a closet with the dresses she wore on the floor, a pair of sweats, t-shirt, and hoodie from the night the casino owner picked her up.

She sighed and slipped off to the small shower in the room to wash off the sent of cigarettes and dirty old men. The casino was running on its normal off season mode. Two super strong bouncers keeping an eye on the floor, a shapeshifter or two at the tables to toss money around and entice people to ‘lucky tables’, and a couple of empath and telepath mutants, who like her who were against their will to keep the floors a buzz and things going well.

The only indication that something was not five by five was the brief look of pain around Kitty's eyes when Bobby walked in. She was in the room with three of the four people who knew her best; Bobby's ice age hurt - and hurt deeply, but she wouldn't let that get in the way of an operation. Especially when it was mutants who needed to be rescued. Bobby arrived with his rucksack, and though Kitty knew better, she couldn't help but give him a wave and a "Heya!" She was happy to see him.

When Sarah gave the low down, Kitty followed on her tablet, frowning a little in thought, musing a bit on her own, researching anything she was curious about - and that was a trait she had in spades. Curiousity. Looking at the layouts, she asked Sarah directly, "You figure out where they are holding the mutants? " It went without saying that the area would have to be structurally sounder than most. If this guy didn't have access to null collars, then he had them with something else. Drugs? Blackmail? "Do we know the profile of any of the people there?" She was already filling in blanks, looking at the best routes. The bad part was this was supposed to be a stealth operation - which she was very good at, but.....

"Never mind. Got it. Huh. Looks like more than a few don't have easily accessible backgrounds." It was so much easier -that time period when all parents got their kids fingerprinted. Now you have to be in civil service or a criminal to have your prints in the database. "Something is keeping them there..This one has super strength." She brought up the profile picture and showed it around. Teasing, she said to Logan, "Now, you remember stealth, right? "

But Sarah was the leader, and Kitty was rarely to go. Though it was a mission, she couldn't resist making a few jokes. "So..is our cover a bunch of college kids hitting the Casino for a trip? Does this mean Logan gets to play Uncle Carl? You know..the supervisor?" With a wide grin, she reminded Logan (again), "Stealth..."

"But seriously. Glad we have a place to change." She'd brought an outfit that would serve as more distracting than practical. Hey! She wasn't bringing her sword. She might as well use what she got! And if they needed to blend....

And then the driving situation started. First Bobby called shot gun. Then Sarah called driving. With a laugh, Kitty put her arm around Logan's shoulders. "Looks like you'n me are stuck in the back seat, Old man... Don't worry....you can fall asleep on my shoulder if you want..." Logan's fondness (And yes, that was sarcasm) for Sarah's driving was well known.

And so, Kitty walked out with the rest of the team, sliding in the back seat, behind Sarah.

“If there ain’t booze in the booze what’s the point of wasting your money, Ice Cube?”

Logan’s smile extended even to the frosty one, a man he normally had little to do with. Bobby was an OK guy, just not into his side of life. Honestly the old man was glad Mr. Freeze was going, he was a total power house with amazing control over a power Logan didn’t even begin to understand.

“Minimal damage? If I read any of this right there’s bastards holding mutants hostage and using them to make flaming money. Like casinos ain’t crooked enough in the first place. I’m gonna nail me a pit boss and try out their whiskey. Maybe find something to bring back for Jet. She likes gifts.”

Logan, though in many ways very skilled in stealth and shadowplay, tended to not use those skill unless he had to. So many people in the world didn’t understand hints or subtlety or warnings. Thankfully everyone understood sheer raw violence. The old man tended to stick to that, less chance of confusion.

“I’m a great uncle Carl. So long as i never have to play the part of your boyfriend, Kitten, I’m good. Same with you Sar, even in play, that shit’s weird. Yeah yeah, back seat, grouchy, potholes, I got it. I’ll behave till it’s time not to.”

Logan, being thankful for being a short ugly man who would be overlooked by most knew his outfit would do its job just fine. He opened his case, double checking his uniform and snagging a bottle of beer out of it, then tossed it behind his seat and slid in next to Kitty.

“First person who starts singing car songs gets punched and thrown out. Second person gets stabbed.”

Still, as Logan took a pull off his beer, he was grinning and as happy as he got. These people were his family and they were off to save a few more. Perhaps one or two might even join them, weirder things happened. After all they had a living island as a student.

When it came to normal driving, she didn’t mind the occasional bust – she tended to be a careful driver. But in this case, she was driving because, out of the four of them, her powers were suited to getting them to their destination fast and safe. Contrary to Logan’s opinion of her driving, Sarah had absolutely no issue avoiding every pothole and bump on the road if she needed to. Handing off the final tablet with all the information she’d loaded onto it to Bobby as he walked in, ready to go, she nodded, heading to the garage. Tossing her bag into the back and sliding into the driver’s seat, she answered Kitty while buckling.

“There’s no completely solid proof they’re holding mutants against their will – they employ a few mutants, definitely, and they have some areas of the casino that are more secured that I’ve marked down as suspicious. But we need to find proof that they’re holding and using mutants before we barge in and make a mess. So far it’s all hearsay, and that’s not good enough.” Even as Kitty asked, Sarah felt the other brunette pull up the employee profiles Sarah had gotten, and the technopath nodded. “There’s employee backgrounds, any criminal records, and whether or not I could find out if any of them are a mutants. A few of the employees are, from what I could find. Bouncers and security personnel, it seems. There’s profiles on the owner and managers of the casino too.” Once everyone was seated and buckled, Sarah pulled out of the garage, sunglasses on, already having mapped out the fastest way to the destination. Without taking her eyes off the road, she spoke again.

“You guys can take the ride to familiarize yourself with the floor plans and employee profiles. We’ll check into the hotel, drop our bags, and then we’ll split up. Kitty and Logan, me and Bobby, we’ll cover more ground. Either group finds actual hard evidence of captive mutants, get on the comms and we’ll coordinate to take them down. Good?” She figured keeping Bobby and Kitty apart would make this easier, at least until they actually had a mutual target. Once everyone assented, Sarah popped a headphone into her ear so her music wouldn’t bother anyone else, letting the others listen to their own and go through the information she’d compiled.

She kept her powers stretched in a wide arc around the vehicle, driving smoothly and fast, easily avoiding speed traps and slowing or speeding depending on whether she sensed cops or not, which made the drive that much easier. With only one headphone, she was still able to answer anyone’s questions if they asked, too.

Once they pulled into the hotel and casino, she parked, not bothering with the valet, leading them into the hotel to check in and up to the room. She hadn’t bothered with multiples, since she had no intention of them being there more than the day, even if she’d booked it for the night. Once they were in the room, she let everyone get their bitching about the ride out of the way, changing into only a slightly dressier outfit. The jeans were expensive to anyone who looked close enough at the brand, as was the simple, dark grey to black ombre cashmere blouse she wore. Understated but expensive to those who knew how to look, when paired with a platinum chain necklace and dangling sapphire charm. Rather than high heels, she stuck with her usual heeled boots, just as high quality as the rest of her outfit. Perfect for both blending into the background, but it would allow her garner attention at gambling tables as someone serious if she needed to. Popping the small, clear earpiece into her ear, she waited for the rest of them to get ready, then headed out with Bobby, splitting up from Kitty and Logan on the way to the casino floor.

Instead of making the whole mission awkward, Bobby nodded to Kitty as she greeted him. “Hey.” Things were far from normal with them yet and he wasn’t sure if or when they would be, but for the sake of this mission, he would behave. Besides, if they were going to be stuck in a car for a while, there was no way that Bobby wanted to be getting an earful from Logan without a quick means of escape.

“What’s the point? Well if you’re clever you can come out on top without killing off your brain cells in the process.” Bobby didn’t gamble for the simple fact that it was a little too close to drinking and drugs and offered a whole new route for addiction that quite frankly he didn’t need in his life. “You ever need any pointers though? I’ll give you a few tips on where to put your chips.”

Bobby liked it when others took charge, that meant that he got given a packet of information and he got to follow everyone else’s direction. “Splitting up take a look sounds good to me. Between the four of us, we’ve all got ways and means of extending our senses so we’ll be able to figure things out pretty quickly.” Which hopefully meant that there was going to be no issue with any unwanted surprises once they got to the casino.

The rules were quickly laid out about singing in the car. “Oh don’t worry I brought my Disney album collection with me. You just gotta let it go Logan.” Bobby smirked at Wolverine, though he was clearly takin the piss, there was no way that Bobby was ever going to bring Disney tunes for a road trip.

With Sarah at the wheel it didn’t take them too long to get to the hotel and once in their room, Bobby quickly changed into a shirt and trouser combo which allowed him to blend in with the gamblers that bit easier. Sticking his earpiece in his ear, Bobby quickly went out with Sarah. “Want to hit the machines area first?” The slot machines were always busy, though mostly with little old ladies as they were seen as the ‘safer’ way of gambling.

The owner of the casino had a very useful power, not one that could take over minds or blow the world up with a snap of his fingers. He could sense the X-gene in people once it was active, he didn’t know what the gene did for the person but he knew if they had a skill or were just normal people. When the group of X-men walked into his building he picked up on the group and the cluster of X-genes traveling together. He wasn’t against mutants using his casino he just had to watch them carefully… easier for them to try and cheat the house.

He lifted the phone in his office and rang down to the front desk. “Linda be a doll. Make sure we keep eyes on the floor, and keep lady luck close to that group that just checked in. I want to make sure they have a good time… but not too good of a time.” The woman listened and hung up without a word hitting a few keys on the computer in front of her.

The security was rotated, and the mutant bouncers were moved into the main hall to keep any eye on things. Two of them were burly men with super strength, one was able to create heat bolts from the palms of his hand, and the last was able to turn his body into a stretchy elastic type state. Rou had finished her shower and was pulling her dress back on when the phone in her purse beeped. She looked over the group and sighed as she fixed her hear, adjusted her bra to push up a bit more and headed back up to the main floor.

She headed over towards the slot machines and looked around. It was mainly the elderly in the area, and she didn’t often wander this row often but the pair of her marks who went this way seemed easier for her to start with. The one pair seemed more sugar daddy and daughter, and daughters hated her… something about the little casino tramp being so cheerful towards their sugar daddy always pissed them off. Rou just thought they were spoiled bitches. The other pair was a cuter couple, but she figured luck would be on her side to woo the cutie away or get lucky and open up the girls mind some on the three of them hanging out around the casino. Her job sucked… but at least she got to hit on cuties that made her life a bit better. She smiled at the pair of them as she slipped in front of them. “What has you two over this way? Did you lose granny when you visited the nursing home? The real fun is at the tables. Not these dull old machines.” She said with a grin pointing towards table 10. “And I have a hunch that table is about to light up with lady luck, care to take a spin and see?” Her hand extended reaching towards Bobby shoulder a shimmer of white and gold around her fingers as she started to build a luck disc.

The car ride was a lot less frosty than she would have guessed. Of course, part of that was because she slept. Bobby wasn't talking to her, Sarah was listening to music and the lull of the car was just..well, nice. Made the time go faster, if nothing else...and that was always good.

Kitty had to look like an easy mark; after all, she was walking around with Logan who...didn't. Logan couldn't not look intimidating. And their relationship? Well...Logan didn't do the "Uncle" bit well, and the boyfriend bit? After Chicago - that was a no go...and especially not with Bobby around. So, she needed to look like an easy mark so people would focus on her when she needed them to, and focus on Logan when Kitty needed to be sneaky. She'd brought a few outfits, but Logan was going Logan - chic, so any sort of dress would just get in the way of any fighting she might do. She decided on a black sweater that was soft, but also did nothing to hide her curves. She even allowed a little cleavage to show; men looked and that would give her a chance to look at other things. Jeans and boots completed the outfit.

She was actually excited to try gambling; all it was was mathematics, and she was damn good at math. Yeah, the pair had schematics - but it was still searching for a needle in a haystack. As she wandered out onto the floor with Logan, she teased him, "Stuck with me again...you know, at this rate, we need to come up with a viable relationship because you _know_ everyone is making a singular assumption." She had to grin. The idea of anything romantic with Logan was just...ewww...but... "So, I could break a machine and get people over to help us? See what sort of response they send? Or we can go back stage, and explore there...Preferences?" Getting around was kinda her thing. If this guy was keeping mutants hostage, she wanted to know...

Logan was a short man with a huge aura of violence. At first glance people might dismiss him as an idiot tourist. He dressed blue collar, wore a cowboy hat that was at least as old as the girl next to him, and he had a five o’clock shadow to put Chuck Norris to shame. But a closer look would show just how eerily comfortable the man was in this environment. Madripoor had casinos, had people devoted to nothing more then making money from pushing others into addiction. He shouted out an order to the nearest waitress, “Two boilermakers, the good whiskey on the shelf I can’t reach.” That closer look and a little bit of attention would also show how often Logan looked around, how he kept eyes on everything. Wolverine was a stone cold predator and that was hard to hide.

The casino smelled funny, too clean, too pretentious. Whoever was running it kept things tight, had more control then any normal place. There was a rhythm here, that of a machine rather then the organic push and pull that was the blood of most coin joints. All in all, it put his hackles up and turned his voice into a low growl. He ran his hand over a nearby machine, he hated the one armed bandits, they were bullshit. There was no pattern, no odds, no instinct to them. Just an algorithm that picked a very precise second to cause a jackpot. If you hit that second you won, otherwise it took your money without giving a thing back. That was why he preferred cards, your fate was your doing.

“Their assumption is “Kate” that I must be either loaded or damn good in bed to have a piece of eye candy like you around. Let people make their own damn stories, I don’t have time for their views. Sides, that means they don’t know you’re the dangerous one.”

Logan grinned at Kitty as his drinks arrived. Shot of old rough rye whiskey and a beer right from Germany, they knew there shit here. Good drinks on demand without any round around made the short man even more wary as he swatted the waitress on her rump and earned a dirty look and a “harumph!” Logan downed both of the shots, then worked on the beer as he handed Kitty the other glass.

“Speaking of that, phase your hand through this machine over here. I wanna see what kinda response we get. I’ll bet their security is tighter than the help’s dresses. This whole place is trying too hard, hiding too much. Don’t like it at all.”

Yeah, Logan wasn’t much for sticking to a plan that called for being passive. If this place was keeping people against their will, if it was exploiting mutants, heads were gonna roll. He’d apologize to Sarah later.
